The US Marine Corps is set to press into service over 200 additional examples of Oshkosh Defense's LVSR design, it's been announced.

The Logistics Vehicle System Replacements will be supplied in two variants, with 140 cargo trucks and close to 70 tractor versions making up the order. The supply by Oshkosh Defense of these vehicles follows a requirement, issued by the USMC's Systems Command, for around 200 extra LVSRs, off the back of the type's impressive performance in Afghanistan.

USMC Logistics Vehicle System Replacement trucks made their Afghan debut in 2009 and quickly showed that they could offer superior levels of protection and mobility, compared to earlier designs.

Oshkosh Logistics Vehicles

Three Oshkosh logistics vehicle variants exist, in all. Besides the tractor and the cargo truck, there's also the wrecker and all three are intended to operate alongside another Oshkosh Defense design, the MTVR (Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement), on tactical deployments.

The LVSR updates the original Logistics Vehicle System, which first emerged in the mid-1980s. Compared to its forebear, it features a more effective electric-powered weapons turret, extensive armour and the option to add extra elements, if required, and a better suspension system. It carries a crew of two and travels at up to 57 miles per hour over a range not exceeding 300 miles.

The LVSR can also ascend 60 degree slopes, descend at 30 degree angles and move across up to five foot-deep water stretches.

USMC LVSR Order

The new USMC LVSR order has a value of over $94m and the vehicles will be supplied to the Marine Corps over the next 18 months.

"Our ongoing commitment to internal innovation at Oshkosh allows us to design, upgrade and sustain highly advanced vehicles like the LVSR and ensure military fleets remain in sync with evolving challenges in theater", Oshkosh Defense's Joint and Marine Corps Programs vice president, John Bryant, explained in a company press release.

He added: "The LVSR's advanced design allows it to accept protection upgrades and perform missions that are above and beyond what the original vehicle requirements called for."
