To be honest that is what it really comes down to.

Sure there are other departments which are taking hits. However defence is really the department which doesn't affect the population until a war arises. Will there be a national war in the near future? Probably not. It is a gamble however to be realistic in economic times like these, defence needs to be scaled back. We aren't the nation of conquerors as once we were.

I agree we most likely won't have to use the aircraft carrier if we are talking about reality seeing as our land based aircraft can reach areas where before we needed carriers. Technology has come a long, long way.

Though I get the idea that HMS Illustrious will likely be useless for 9 years or so, however its replacement is something to really admire.

Lets be honest here, are we ever going to use those carriers? You could mention the Falklands, however Argentina do not possess the military capability to destroy what is defending the Falklands. There are really no threats out there which are current fleet of navy ships cannot handle without air support. Even then I think the US can help out within the 9 years of the UK having aircraft-less carriers.

I can't agree with some proposals. I mean they are going to leave the UK with no carrier borne aircraft for a decade.

What use is an aircraft carrier which isn't going to carry aircraft for 9 or so years! This is madness!
