Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi has survived an assassination attempt after a car bomb attack on his convoy in Damascus, reports suggest. However, it’s unclear as to whether the attack was planted on a nearby car, waiting for the prime minister’s convoy to pass it.
The attack was targeted at Mr. Halqi’s convoy, which was in the western Mazzeh district, state television has reported. (SANA)
The Syrian State News Agency (SANA) quoted an official source saying that the prime minister was unharmed and that the attack was indeed targeted toward Mr Wael al-Halqi, who obtained the position of Prime Minister after the former prime minister, Riad Hijab, defected to Jordan. Mr Wael al-Halqi was the former health minister of Syria.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has said that one person was killed in the attack. It is thought to be one of the prime minister’s body guards.
This conflict will end bitterly.
