28/03/2011 – Russia – As armoured vehicles poured into a known strong hold of militants, along with heavily equipped Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation (FSB)/Glavnoye Razvedyvatel’noye Upravleniye (GRU) counter terrorism units, helicopter gunships lit the skies with rounds firing at buildings in a small village located in The Republic of Ingushetia.

It is said by news sources¹ the attack involved the highly wanted Doku Umarov, who claimed responsibility of the bombings in January at the Demodedovo airport which claimed the lives of 40 people. Additionally the bombings on the Moscow metro were also claimed by Doku Umarov.

The counter insurgency operation in this small village killed 17 militants.

A later operation in the same area found another 2 militants dead in exchange fire between Russian forces according to Interfax bringing the total of 19 dead militants.

A spokesperson for the National Anti-terrorist Committee in a statement said in the course of the investigation into the criminal case over the January 24 terrorist attack at the Domodedovo airport, the Federal Security Service and the Investigation Committee, jointly with the Defence Ministry and the Interior Ministry, planned and carried out a special operation to stop the criminal activity of the bandits who had staged the act of terror.
